Best time depends on what you want
Abrolhos can be visited all year. For humpback whales, ICMBio indicates June to November, with a peak from July to October. For visitors prioritizing diving and visibility, December to April generally brings warmer water and better average underwater conditions.
If whales are the priority
August and September combine high humpback presence with an intense phase of the breeding season. Still, choosing the best month does not make nature predictable: the number of whales and observed behavior changes from day to day.
If snorkeling and diving are the priority
ICMBio suggests considering December to April for diving because of warmer water and better average visibility. Snorkeling can still be possible during whale season, but conditions always depend on the sea.
Wind, waves and itinerary flexibility
Activities at sea depend on weather and sea state. Multi-day itineraries are especially useful because the order of experiences can be rearranged according to the forecast.
